A facilities tour is an exam you can administer in twenty minutes. Score these:
The metals studio — torches with ventilation that actually runs, fire kits per station, pickle baths maintained, bench pins USED (not pristine — used).
The gem area — real instruments (microscopes, refractometers), loose-stone collections you may handle, and someone who can name everything on the tray.
The design room — one workstation per student, light desks, output printers for CAD.
The finishing corner — polishing machines with extraction, tumblers, and the emery ladder visibly in use.
The tell — ask what students leave WITH. The honest answer is always a physical piece plus a standard. Read the school's own facilities page, then verify in person — book the tour.
