The four tests

Jewellery School Guide

Dean and founder Tanja Sadow in the school's studio — gem displays on screen, student work on the walls, cases of finished pieces behind her.

Anyone can rent a room, buy pliers and call it a jewellery school. The
differences that matter show up in four places — and they are the same four
places whether you are evaluating a school in Singapore or anywhere else.

Handling real stones — a curriculum you can verify in one visit

1. Curriculum with a spine

A serious school publishes its ladder: foundation → intermediate → advanced →
diploma, each course nameable and scheduled. Scatter-shot "workshops" without
progression mean you can plateau forever. Look for schools that show the whole
path, like the
three-diploma structure
at JDMIS.

2. Instructors with trade histories

Read instructor bios critically: studio practice, industry work, teaching
decades. A school staffed by its own recent graduates is recycling ignorance.
JDMIS publishes its
faculty list
— led by dean and founder Tanja Sadow (in the studio photo above).

3. Facilities that match the syllabus

Gem labs need real instruments; metals studios need torches, ventilation and
casting; design courses need workstations. The
facilities page
should match what the catalogue promises — and a
studio visit
verifies it in person.

4. Accountability

In Singapore that means CPE registration for private education and a track
record you can check — reviews, alumni, corporate clients. JDMIS has operated
since 2007 and publishes
course reviews
publicly.

Transparency note: this guide is published by JDMIS itself — so apply these four tests to JDMIS first, and judge us by the same standard.

What students say

“I love all subjects, especially metalsmithing. I just love to fire and shape things.”

— Angie K. (Singapore) · published student feedback

“Attended the courses here and it's worth way more than what you have to pay for. The instructors are all super approachable and welcoming everytime they see you. The tools needed are provided and you get to bring home the crafts that you make during the class. Even the class schedules are pretty flexible. I enjoyed myself here a lot and will definitely sign up for more classes.”

— Nebulla L. (Singapore) · published student feedback
