Careers

Jewellery career paths — designer, gemmologist, metalsmith, entrepreneur

Technical sketches for earrings and findings — where the designer career starts: on paper, before metal.

"Jewellery career" is not one job — it is at least four distinct careers that
share a vocabulary. Training matches career, so map the destination first.

Bench hours are the metalsmith's currency

The fine jewellery designer

Draws and models pieces that workshops manufacture. Career core: technical
drawing, illustration and increasingly CAD — the
Fine Jewellery Design diploma
is the direct path, from
technical drawing
through
CAD fundamentals.

The gemmologist

Identifies, grades and values stones — retail advisory, auction houses,
wholesale trade, lab work. Path: gemmology foundation and identification
certificates
(gemmology course).
Train the eye for free meanwhile: the
webinar replays
and Name That Gem.

The bench metalsmith

Fabricates, sets stones, casts and repairs — the trade with the clearest
freelance path. Path: the
Precious Metal Arts diploma.

The jewellery entrepreneur

Runs a label: design sense plus pricing, photography, merchandising and
marketing. The
business course family
exists for exactly this path, and many students pair it with a making diploma.
