Designer: the jewellery professional whose raw material is an idea.
The work — briefs and research; front/side/profile drawing; colour rendering; CAD models a workshop can quote; speaking buyer.
The ladder — technical drawing to illustration to the CAD ladder, stacking into the Fine Jewellery Design diploma.
Income paths — studio employment; freelance CAD (the portable one); design-for-hire for labels; your own line with production outsourced.
First paid work — realistically one to two years of stacked certificates; the portfolio of assessed pieces is what gets hired. The designer's edge with buyers is the gemmology layer — designers who know stones get trusted with them.
